Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hi classmates and teacher!

how are you? I hope you are enjoying this Christmas season with your family and friends.

I celebrated Christmas in Mexico with my family and relatives. Yesterday I ate a big dinner with my family in my parents' restaurant. We were like 30 persons enjoying together the Christmas holiday. At 12:00 am, we gave gifts and best wishes to the whole family. My house was packed with relatives and my parents' friends. Some of them were playing Mahjong, watching movies, playing some games and dancing. They left at 6:00 am!

I could not hang out with my friends because the city has been having a bad social situation. People are getting killed almost everyday! It is something that made me sad. Now, people are inside their homes very early. However, our Christmas celebration was great! And I hope you got a lot of fun and surprises too.

I hope that this Christmas season brings you special happiness, good health, wealth, love and peace. And also, I hope that all your dreams and goals come true!

Richard, I hope you received our cards and you liked it! We miss you... I hope you are getting stronger every day! =)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Guys!

A Strange Man

Two months ago, something strange happened to me. I was walking alone to Neighborhood Center Adult School. While I was walking, I saw a truck passing very slow, and I felt that someone was watching me. There was a man driving the truck, and I noticed that he was following me. I was scared because I was alone, and I did not know the city well. The man parked the truck and came close to me. He walked with me and started to talk to me. He asked my address, phone number, the place where I was going to, and if I had time to eat something with him. I wanted to run, but I dinnot want to be impolite, so I just answered some of his questions. I did not give my confidential information.

He had followed me for many blocks! When I got into the school, he stood outside. After he class was over, I was worrying to see the man again. Fortunately, he had already left. Now, I rather take the bus!

Thanksgiving Day

Here is a picture that my friend took when we were in her house celebrating Thanksgiving.

Hi classmates and teacher!
How was your Thanksgiving day? I hope it was great, and you enjoyed it with your family.
This was the first time that my sister and I celebrated the Thanksgiving. My family did not consider it as a holiday, so we never celebrated it.
My sister and I were invited to my friend's house on Thanksgiving. Her relatives made a big dinner: a delicious big turkey, tamales, salad, pinto beans, and much more. The house was full with friends and relatives.
After dinner, we gave thanks to the people we love, especially to God. Then we played music and danced, but a lot of us were full and sluggish, so we played karaoke. We also started to play games and had a lot of fun.
I'm glad that they invited us and allowed us to share the table with them. And also, I'm glad being here, in the United States, where my sister and I could learn more about American culture and meet new people!

Hi Richard, We all miss you very much and hope that you're feeling better everyday.

My High School Graduation

Hi teacher and classmates..! I’m going to narrate one of the most recent events in my life: my graduation from high school. It was so exciting and fun, but it was sad too, because it was the last day that my classmates and I were together.
It was on June 5, 2008. My classmates and I had been stressed for many weeks, and also months before. Prior of the ceremony, all of us had to make many preparations, such as making a budget of all the things we would need: choosing two salons, one for the graduation ceremony, and the other one for the graduation night party, soliciting a group of musicians, deciding the food we would serve, and many other things!
At the beginning of the graduation ceremony, all of us were wearing our gowns, and we got the certificates and diplomas. After that, our godparents spoke some words and played a presentation of pictures of our graduating class. My classmates and I were crying!
When the ceremony finished, we went home to dress up in our party clothes. We looked elegant. At night, we started the party and had a lot of fun. We were dancing and taking pictures all the night. At the end of the party, all of us went to the “after”. I mean, we continued our party in another place! Finally, I went back home at five o’clock in the morning. I remember it as if it had happened yesterday.

The Love of Ganesha

Hi, every one

I would like to talk about my new job in S.F. I was looking for a job for a while, which not in a restaurant any more. Three weeks ago my friend told me to go to talk with the lady who owns a shop in S.F. The shop is named “The love of Ganesha”. I’m a sales clerk now. I sell jewelry, clothes, Crystals, incense, scares, bags, statues of Buddha, statues of Hindu God, pillows, yoga pants. The Most of things came from Indian, Thailand and Southeast Asian. I love this job because first, the location in height-Ashbury neighborhood. I have been live in S.F. for year, before live in Oakland. I used to go to height street to watched hippie people, see decoration in shops and house. Second, working in here I feel like working near Royal Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok such as the smells, sound, colorful clothes, meditation room and arts on the well. I love the whole energy of this store. Third, I meet a lot of different people every day. Some people are tourists and some people are neighbor. They always share of their story to me.

*Also the shop donate money to help poor kids in Thailand, which when you are shopping there

The Democratic Spirit

Every day I have to drive along Highway 80 four times. There is a pedestrian bridge in Berkeley that crosses over Highway 80. On the days before Election Day, when I went back home after school and went to Oakland again from home in the afternoon, I saw many people standing on that bridge. They showed off their banners to drivers who came and went along Highway 80. They stood almost side by side displaying their opposite views. But the people didn’t quarrel or fight with each other even though they disagreed. They were very peaceful. They waved their hands to the drivers. They only hoped that people would support their views. And some drivers honked their horns to respond to them.

This thing lets me know what the democratic spirit is. American people have mature democratic thinking and they can tolerate different opinions.

What's Up?

Gooooood morning! Actually, I don't have enough time to write on the blog, but after I have seen a picture of Prosperity I decided to write a few sentence. I just wanted to say to Prosperity that " You really look like a former famous American boxer ( MTS ), man ". That's all. Oh you all have a good day, and I'll see you someday.
Richard, don't forget this Thursday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll call You.

Hi,classmates!

The Weekend

I went to Sacramento with my husband last weekend. Mongolian traditional tournament/game /the Shagai became in Sacramento. My husband attended this tournament.
The game Shagai is Mongolian traditional game and the Shagai is Mongolian word. In English language sources, playing with shagai is called ankle bone shooting. They are played using the 15 small bone's pieces shot at with arrows. The arrow it makes by bone. The small bone's pieces put on the particular counter thas's called the target. In this game, pieces are flicked with the middle finger of one hand, along a wooden board/khashlaga-fence rail/ held on the other hand. The arrow put on the wooden board. The goal is to hit a target piece over a distance of about 10 m.
When who finish to hit 15 small bone's pieces, they will win.

Our Teacher

Our teacher is a funny man. He is tall with no hair. He is a white person. He is about sixty-one years old. He tries to help us with in English. We must have a new note book, a three holed binder with paper, and a pencil. When we have these things he gives us a book titled Grammar Challenge. We also need to buy the book titled Grammar Out. With these things we can study at home by ourselves. We also need to learn writing in English in the class. The teacher tells us we must write two stories on "Room 101 AM blogspot.com". When this is done the teacher gives you the book, Reading and Writing Challenge. Every day we have a dictation lesson that another student will correct. Each week we must learn to spell twenty-five new words and test them on Friday. We must also stand at the front of the class and speak English to the other students. Our stories on Room 101 AM blogspot.com get edited too. We have tests when each new section is completed in our work books. I like this teacher. He makes me work hard. My English is better today than two months ago.
I study English at the Neighborhood Center Adult School, Room 101 in Oakland. Our teacher's name is Richard Blum.

Good Memories

I went to the Ocean Beach in San Francisco with my new friends two weeks ago. We didn't plan to go there. In fact, we planned to go to a club or eat dinner, but the club was full, and nobody was hungry, so we decided to go to a nice and quiet place.

When we arrived to the beach, it was 12:00 am midnight! As we went closer to the beatiful beach, a lot of memories invaded my mind. I remembered all my friends from Mexico.

I remembered that the first time I went to a beach was with all my friends. We were sixty classmates and six teachers traveling together to Mazatlan, Guanajuato and Guadalajara for one week! It was amazing and fun.

I miss those moments, but now all of us are separated. Now, our lives are different. Some of us are studying in Canada, in the U.S. like me, and others stayed in Mexico. Wherever we are, we will never forget those great memories!

That night I was having fun with my new friends while I was remembering pretty good moments. It was fantastic!

These pictures are taken in Mazatlan and Guanajuato, Mexico.

This Amusing Weekend!

My friends and I went to a Mexican club in San Francisco this weekend because it was my friend's birthday. I thought it would be boring, because my best friend and I didn't know how to dance to Mexican music (''banda'') very well, but I was wrong!
The club was exciting. It was full of Mexican people, all of them were in good spirits, having fun and drinking alcohol. We were pretty excited even though my girlfriend and I didn't know how to dance to banda music, but I met many new friends. My new friends taught us how to dance better. It was fun and confusing!

We danced until the last song, so we were very tired.
Finally, we went back home a little bit late, but that night was amazing. I learned new steps to dance, and also, I met new friends!

American Robin TT

Hello, my classmates & Richard

Do you remember the American Robin bird that I found on the side of the street about 3 weeks ago? Last week, my husband and I went to the wildlife hospital in Walnut Creek to find out about the condition of that bird.

The person who was working there told us about that bird. She said that the bird is getting well. It is a male bird. When my husband took it here the bird was dehydrated and under regular weight, but now the bird is healthy. And the good news is that the bird is flapping its wings and that means the bird will fly again soon. The bird lady is going to move the bird to the bigger cage, so that the bird can exercise its wings before the bird returns to the wild.

The bird seems like it will be ready to go soon. I'm very happy for the bird and thank my husband for caring for that bird.

If you find wild animals that seem injured or in need of help you should visit the Lindsay Wildlife Museum . I recommend that you go to this website http://www.wildlife-museum.org/

Late Coming Traffic Lights

Recently, there are some road works in the intersection of 7th avenue and International Boulevard in Oakland. I notice that four bases of the light post were built in the four corners of the intersection. I think the traffic signal lights will be installed on the bases.
The traffic signal lights let me think of an accident occurred in the same intersection about two years ago. It was a tragedy. A young lady was a student of the Clinton Park Adult School. That day, after school, when she was crossing the road through the cross walk, a car killed her by bumping. It was said that she left a several months old baby.
If the traffic lights were installed early, the tragedy wouldn’t happen.

Hi,my classmates!

My country is Mongolia.
My native country Mongolia is very nice.Capital city of Mongolia is Ulaanbaatar. Mongolia is
located in the Central Asia between Russia and China. Mongolia has four seasons which have
specific characteristic.
Winter time continues from December to March and it is really cold. Temperature is usually between -20*C/66*F/ to -40*C/104*F and it makes people to wear big, heavy and warm clothes. Snow covers whole land and rivers freeze all together. Sometimes, snow storm continues for a week that causes major problems for country. During a weekend, people play with snow. They do sledding, skiing, snowboarding and skating.
Summer time continues from June to August and it is hot. Temperature is usually between +25*C/77*F/ to +40*C/104*F/ and it makes people to wear light and beautiful clothes. People take a vacation that make to travel to any places of Mongolia.Mongolia has many beautiful places.

from China to Oakland

From China to Oakland
Three months ago, I came to Oakland from Guangdong in China with my family. In order to reunite with my grandmother, so we had to immigrate to the United States. This change gives me more challenge in my daily life. Oakland feels different than China.
Compared with China, it makes me disappointed and makes me feel bad. In China, I felt much happier than in Oakland. I used to spend happy hours with my classmates each month. It was safe no matter how late we played. In Oakland, where the crime rate is booming, we have to go at home in the evening to get away from the danger zone. I feel bad that I dropped out of college in China. I had to look for jobs and eke out my livelihood. But I shouldn’t be too pessimistic, there are many opportunities here for me to seek. I should take advantage of all the social resources.
Even so, I must feel at home wherever I am, I need to set goals for me----to improve my English and make my life go smoothly.

Hi Yun Ping:
I saw your picture. Then I asked my husband. He told me: this bird call seagull.

Vacation to Vancouver in August 2008

August 8Th to the 14Th we took a driving trip from Oakland to Vancouver. The first day, we stayed in a hotel in Portland. We watched the opening Olympic Ceremony in the hotel. The second day we visited a local market in the morning. Then we left Portland to go to Vancouver.
From the USA to Vancouver Canada we must go through the border check. We waited in line for about fifty minutes. Be careful, when you drive to Vancouver, the speed signs are in kilometers. This isn't the same as in America. In America we use miles. If you aren't careful the police will give you a ticket. When we past border check we drove to our hotel. Our hotel was in the downtown area. It was a nice hotel. We spent four nights in this hotel.
Vancouver was very beautiful. It's very clean, safe and modern. We walked, looked and ate. There are many stores, shopping malls, restaurants, bars etc. There're many public parking garages, so, it's easy to park your car. We saw many nice cars and tall buildings. The restaurants were very nice. The food was delicious and the service was good. Maybe one day we'll live in this city. We both liked it.
We went with a local tourist group to visit Victoria and the Butchart Gardens. There're many chocolate and ice cream shops in the Victoria. We bought some and tried it. The Butchart Gardens is very pretty. Inside the Butchart Gardens there's the Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, Italian Garden and Mediterranean Garden. We enjoyed them.
Then we left Vancouver to drive to Astoria Oregon. We stayed in an inn near the bay. The night view was very beautiful. The area was quiet. We ate the local fish, salmon, but I didn't like it. The hotel was hot. I sat out on the terrace. There was nothing to do. I just looked at the sky and the bay. The sky was blue with many stars. The bay was quiet. A lot of boats were docked there. Around these docks the walkway was lit up with lights. A few people walked around docks. When I looked at the bay and breathed in the sea air, my brain was empty and my heart was quiet. I got a very good feeling. So, I had a nice day.
The next day we drove to Coos Bay. The weather was very hot. When we arrived at Coos Bay, it was very early in the afternoon. We decided to cancel our stay at this hotel. We continued our drive home. When we arrived at home, the time was late about 10;00 pm. We weren't tired, because my dog will very happy. We'll take her home soon.

I came to California from Sonora, Mexico two months ago with my young sister. I came because I wanted to improve my English skills and study marketing.
I liked living in Mexico because people from there are friendly, yet I love California's buildings, weather and scenery. People from California are friendly too, but I still miss my old friends and relatives from Mexico.

Sometimes I feel lonely to stay alone , but my friend Michelle lives with me .She rents a room in my house .We always spend time together . I am working in my frined Miggie's uncle's market as a cashier . I don't really make that much money , but I am happy to work with my friends . I love my friends .

October First Is a Major Day

October first is my husband's birthday. I only made a birthday card for him. If I were a millionaire, I would buy a nice car for him, but I must fix the garage for this car. Then I would buy a big mansion for my family. We could live in it together. It could make us happy.
October first is Independence Day in China too. They celebrate this holiday. The stories and restaurants are very busy. The neon lights decorate the city at night. You could see a lot of children wear pretty dresses with lovely smiles on their faces. You could see many families, friends, and businesses go on trips together. So, October first is a major day.

I Am Upset

I am upset today! Three things have made me mad. First, yesterday the school gave us a test to evaluate each student's English level. It was not too hard, but to me it was hard. The second thing happened the other morning. My husband and I went to see a doctor. The doctor talked to us about my husband's right hand problem, but I didn't understand much. The third thing is when I want to talk to people in English, but nobody understands me. I have been here almost three years. What is the best way for me to learn English? How much longer do I have to study before I can speak English well? I hate it! It gives me a bad feeling.

American Robin

Hello, Richard & My classmates
On Sunday night, I caught a bird. I found on the side of the street near my apartment. The bird is about 23-28 centimeters. It has a brown back and reddish-orange breast. The bird couldn’t fly and looked like confused, so I decided to take off my jacket wore it back wards because I was afraid it could bit my hand. Then I brought it back to my apartment and put in the basket. I saw it lost one talon and looked older than I thought.
After that I called my husband asked him what I should do. My husband called the animal’s shelter to pick the bird. He toll on phone what the bird looked like. First we thought it was a sparrow. While we waited for the police to take it to the shelter I observed the bird recoverable itself after an hour but it seen not completely. For a while the police came to pick up the bird about 4:00 am in the morning, but the police said that he couldn’t take care of this bird because this bird is a wild animal. He recommended to us to take it to the wildlife hospital at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek. Therefore my husband took the bird at 9:00 am to the wildlife hospital because it isn’t for from his work place.
In the wildlife hospital the people who work in there received the bird and called the kind of bird is American Robin. The bird flies from Alaska and Canada to Central Mexico in the winter. The bird can live 15 years. The people who work in the hospital gave my husband a guide paper and wrote the number of this bird. They said that my husband should wait for four days after drop the bird off to call them.
In the mean time I thinking of that bird. I hope it should be ok in the wildlife hospital

Analog Converter Coupons

Click here to apply for a $40 coupon to buy an analog TV converter box.

Who needs one?

You do if you receive your TV signal from an antenna. These TV signals are called "analog" and all analog TV broadcasts will end on February 17, 2009. After that date, all TV stations in the United States will only broadcast "digital" signals.

Don't worry! You can apply for a coupon that will help pay for an analog converter box. This box will convert digital signals so that you can continue to watch your favorite TV programs.

And now for the good news ...
TV reception is much better when you use an analog converter box!

My Trips to Canada

My Trips to Canada

Hello, Richard and My Classmates.

I’m back from Canada and Las Vegas. My trip was very nice. I went there with my friends and their parents. I would like to tell you about my trip to Canada first. For my trip to Las Vegas, I will tell you later.

First, we drove a van to Oregon to see Crater Lake National Park. Crater Lake with its incredibly blue water is the deepest lake in the United States at 1,943 feet deep.

Then we drove to Seattle to see the Space Needle. The Space Needle has been there for 30 years. It wasn’t that interesting to me because there are a lot of tall buildings in San Francisco or any big city.

Before we drove across the border to Canada, we stopped by to see a tulip farm. It was colorful.

Later we crossed the border to Vancouver in Canada to see the Lion’s Gate. It looks almost like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

And then we drove across the Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver and then took a ferry boat to see flowers at the Butchart Gardens.

I expected the Butchart Gardens to be a wonderland, but it was not. My friend’s cousin who studied there told us to come back in June.

We also went to Chinatown and downtown Vancouver. There was nothing special for me. They were similar to the USA. For example the language, the money (we used US dollars), the life style were the same. The food was better, only the tax was higher - about 14%. My friends and I found nothing to make us stay longer in Canada, so we drove back to San Francisco as fast as we could.

I only bought a bottle of maple syrup for my husband. He was very happy and enjoyed the maple syrup.

Farmers Got Dressed Style of Traditional...

This Picture is Lázaro Cárdenas del Río with
Mexican natives, for more picture click Here

By
Alberto Ortega Servin

In El Tecuan, Michoacán, México

Traditional Clothes are making of cotton fabric, these clothes are one pant and shirt of the white color and these clothes is cheaper in Mexico.
During long time, farmers got dressed style of traditional clothes, because the landowner didn’t permit them to use jean. In this time only the landowner got dressed to jeans because they were rich in the town and cities.
The emigrated came towards the United States, they got dressed to wear jeans but when they back came to Mexico, they changed their jean for the style of traditional clothes, where the farmers change your clothe in big cities near their the smallest town. When they arrived from the United States towards their native towns.
My grandfather, grandfather and mother told me; about this situation also farmers didn’t wear jeans in their community only the landowner. The boss said far away of my town because you don’t understand, you couldn’t wear jeans in this town.
Sometime landowner sent to strike or hit to the farmers, when landowners saw to the farmers wear jeans. Now men and women wear jeans because now there are more freedom in Mexico.
Now the laws don’t allow these kind situations because the people are more modern, a lot people go to the school also many people are coming to the Unites States, where people know new cultures.
Before it was impossible because landowner was very strict with the farmer also the Catholic Church helps a landowner because my uncle Fidel Baez said that people went to confession with the bishops or priests. They were revelation the confession secret some times landowner was far away the people. In this time the life very difficult for the poor families in Mexico. Now there is more freedom in the life of the farmer because they are more independents their jobs also in the form to dress or to clothes.

Going To School

Going to School

After I woke up in the morning. My master is used to taking a walk with me after she had prepared everything for goes to school. Today I heard that she said she needed to go to school, so wouldn’t have a lunch with her family. Recently, there is a Chinese restaurant that provides the buffet-“All you can eat” was opened again at Oakland Chinatown. Someone said it had supplied some Japan food- Sushi very delicious. Mike is my young master who is working at a bank has three days on the vocation. He likes to have Japan food, so they would go out for lunch at the restaurant today.

My master decided to bring me go to school with her, because she didn’t want to leave me at home alone. She put me into a bag that I could see from inside. Nobody knew I was hidden by the bag when she entered the 101 classroom .

At first, I saw a student was asked by teacher to tell a story, teacher would help him if he couldn’t express well or made mistakes. The other students listened carefully, also asked some questions to him. Teacher said before coming here, you needed to prepare pens, papers, a story, and twenty –four hours and seven (speaking in English for whole day and whole week). I was very interesting in taking, and then called lightly to my master I wanted to talk. So it was my turn to talk my story.

Hi, teacher and classmates, my name is New New. I came from Taiwan. Maybe you would ask me how I can come here. Let me tell about a story for you. If you remembered the Do Do of story that was written by my master on the bagger last year. It told about she had almost twenty children and grandchildren…., and I am one of her grandchildren. There were six dogs included my mother, a old brother, two old sisters, a niece lived with her family in Taiwan. They kept us very carefully and patiently. We played very happy at home while they went to work .After finished working ,they were used to takeing a walk for us around the area of the Tainan Government Hall that in front of our house.

Once, my master gave us a ride on her motorbike for looking around the urban area. Suddenly, we were fallen down on the side of a crossroad when she rode for a carefulness turn. We didn’t run away and went toward her togethe. The pedestrians helped to pick us into the baskets which were on the motorbike for us by sitting. Everyone who was saw that couldn’t believe how obedient we are!

In July, 2000 they immigrated to American, her father -in-low who had gotten a cancer at the same time. She is his only daughter -in -low needed to take of him. So after five years she kept flying between Taiwan and America until he dead. Her nephew asked her to bring a puppy from Taiwan to him when she went to America every time. In Sepember,2005 after her father-in-low dead, she decided to live America with her family for long time. All of us had to separated at the different families.

Before a fortune-teller told my master when he saw me ,said she needed to keep me, I could smile and bring lots of good luck for her family. I’m the smallest one of all. .Also smaller than the other Shitzu. For these reasons, we saved some money for the ticket of airplane .The price was in accordance with the total weight –the weights of a cab and myself. Passing the quarantine, I have to become a jolly happy American dog.
